I am currently a 2nd-year student pursuing a dual degree in landscape architecture + urban planning. I was fortunate enough to grow up in Alaska, where green spaces and access to nature were plentiful. However, it also gave me a front-row seat to climate change and its impacts. My upbringing led me to pursue an undergraduate degree in environmental science, but I was eventually drawn toward the creativity and human focus that landscape design can offer. I am passionate about how green stormwater infrastructure can create more climate-resilient, healthy, and beautiful cities. In my free time I enjoying knitting, skiing, and cuddling with my dog!

As co-president I am honored and excited to help organize events and provide support for students during the transition back to in-person learning!

Secretary: Isabel Lewis

I am in my second year of the Bachelors of Landscape Architecture program. As secretary, I keep record and documentation of UWASLA’s activities. I also do everything I can to assist the various officers on their UWASLA projects. I became interested in landscape architecture due to its potential to create productive, playful, and humane spaces. In my free time, you can find me examining trees for pests and the wonderful holes they leave behind.

Communications Chair: Ava Ross

I am currently earning my Bachelors of Landscape Architecture with a Minor in Urban Design and Planning. I was brought up by an engineer and an artist in the Skagit Valley, where I learned to love the Skagit River and the Cascades. I am passionate about creating for change and I believe that landscape architecture is the perfect blend of science and design for people and the environment. I believe in the power of young people to get stuff done, that’s why I joined UWASLA. You’ll see me around Seattle riding my bike or the lightrail jamming to some KUOW (or on the roller rink with my buds).

Youth Outreach Committee Chair: Maria De Jesus Arevalo Martinez

I am in my second year of the BLA program. I entered landscape architecture with the goal of making green spaces accessible to marginalized communities of color. I am currently working with Duwamish Valley Sustainability Association which is a grassroots organization based in South Park whose mission is to empower communities in issues related to social justice, health, environmental, and education by guiding and educating our youth to identify solutions, lead projects, and create programs aligned to meeting our sustainable development goals.

The Youth Outreach Lead is responsible for developing and managing the Department of Landscape Architecture’s Youth/K-12 Outreach Program. When I took on this position I felt that it was important to reach out to marginalized youth in the Seattle area with the hopes of teaching them about landscape architecture. This year the goal of this position is to create a mock studio for the youth to teach them the basics of landscape architecture including the social, ecological, and design elements of our profession. A bonus to this project, if all goes well, is to design and build a small project in a community of their choice. Being a part of youth development is illuminating and important for the future of our communities.
